POSTDOCTORAL POSITIONS:
CARBON NANOTUBES
(1) X-ray and Neutron Scattering
(2) Composites

Single walled carbon nanotubes are a new class of materials with
remarkable mechanical, electrical and thermal properties. At the
University of Pennsylvania there are multiple research efforts involving
carbon nanotubes: the characterization of individual nanotubes by
scanning probe and electron microscopies, preparation of intercalated
structures, electrochemical measurements, electrical and thermal
measurements of nanotubes and their assembled ropes, and theoretical
descriptions. At present the work is extending to include the interactions
between polymers and nanotubes. Two positions are available immediately.
(1) X-ray and Neutron Scattering: These methods will be applied to a
variety of single walled carbon nanotube materials and solutions to
evaluate the dispersion of nanotubes and the polymer conformation in the
presence of carbon nanotubes. (2) Composites: Nanotube polymer
composites will be prepared using a variety of polymer matrices including
thermoplastics and thermosets. Melting mixing and melt fiber spinning
will be used to promote dispersion and alignment, respectively.
Characterization of these composites will include mechanical, electrical
and thermal measurements in collaboration with other groups at Penn.
Applicants should have a doctorate degree in materials science, polymer
science, chemical engineering, physics or chemistry with experience in at
least one of the following areas: x-ray scattering, neutron scattering,
polymer processing, composites, rheology, or transmission electron
microscopy. Positions are available immediately.
