Had Grosz claimed that the collapse of the socialist state in Hungary was
only possible after the Soviet leadership let it go, I would agree.
It is obviously true.

However, had the Hungarian socialism flourished, the withdrawal of the Soviet
support would not have mattered at all. Its economic failure largely
contributed to its downfall.

Also notable in the same Grosz interview (168 ora) his claim that since 1958
it was Kadar who insisted on the presence of the Soviet troops in Hungary,
and not the Soviet leadership.

This sounds interesting. Why should more Jews want to settle in the
country of people they try to portray as antisemitic at every forum possible?
Or maybe Hungarians are not such antisemites after all and the charge is only
part of a psychological warfare to soften up any possible resistance to
a massive Jewish resettlement plan?
In a way such plan makes eminent sense after the peace with Palestinians
which closes the West Bank off from further Jewish settlements, doesn't it?

Where the Rosenberg's guilty of treason? Probably yes. However executing
somebody for treason is still a human rights violation in my book. It isstill
a 'political execution'.
The Rosenbergs should be forgiven and even rewarded with some sort of
Norwegian peace prize. For in giving the atomic weapons technology to the
Soviets they saved the western world. Yes, the Rosenbergs prevented WWIII from
happening. The Rosenbergs helped destroy Soviet Empire. The Rosenbergs should

Not as congratulatory as the the subsequent regime's attitude toward those
who ran the red terror. There were no statues built for them and no streets
were named after them. I do not recollect either that the Hungarian Jewish
population was required to declare the white terror committers to be their
heros.

My problem is not with the justification of one criminal act versus the
other but the different treatment given to the various events. While it may
not be the intent of all posters, in some cases, the only bad guys
indicated are the ones who committed atrocities against the Jewish
population of Hungary, and those who committed atrocities without regard to
race, creed, color or national origin are made out to be good guys. This
does not work either. A criminal is a criminal is a criminal.

I guess it is a form of suicide. The ones participating in the act know the
potential consequences from the beginning. They can also be participant and
potential cause in the subsequent death of many of their fellow citizens.
If you feel that the Rosenbergs were exercising their individual rights in
their actions, so be it. Soceity does not seem to agree with your view.
There are things worth living and dying for. To them the success of the
Soviet regime appears to have been a just cause to die for. They did.

Here is a short synopsis of the events surrounding the Benes decrees:

One third of the population of the newly created Czechoslovakia after
World War I was non-Slav, mainly Germans and Hungarians. Benes in
concert with the other Czechoslovak politicians living in exile decided
that ethnic cleansing of Czechoslovakia must be one of the outcomes of
peace treaties to be concluded after the Second World War. The Allies
agreed to the extirpation of the 700 year presence of the German
population from the territory of Czechoslovakia, but not to the
deportation of the Hungarians. The Czechoslovak authorities, through
draconian decrees tried to achieve the same ends nevertheless.

These aims were publicly promulgated through the Kosice (Kassa) Program,
announced on April 5, 1945. It deprived the Hungarian population, except
those who actively engaged in the fight against fascism, of their
citizenship. This program was supplemented by and expanded on by a large
number of discriminatory decrees issued by Benes. The following only
highlight some of these.

* According to presidential decree 33, all ethnic Hungarians living in
the territory of Czechoslovakia lost their citizenship. This decree was
verbatim the same as Law #68, par 1 and 3 of the Slovak Republic of 1942
mandating the deportation of Jews and the loss of their citizenship.

With loss of citizenship, the Hungarian population lost all of their
civil rights. This included loss of pensions or the right to employment.
This was analogous to the 1941 Slovak government decree #198 based on
the Slovak Republic's Constitution's 4th Section.

*The confiscation of all property belonging to ethnic Hungarians was
based on presidential decree 1945/108 which was put into effect on
October 25, 1945. (See also 1945/104). The confiscated Hungarian
property was divided among Slovaks.

*According to Law #83 of April 10, 1946 all those who were determined to
be of Hungarian ethnic origin (based on presidential decree 1945/33) lost
their right to work. A similar law of 1940, #210, put the same
restriction on Jews. (.."..to remove all Jews from the Slovak economic
and social sphere...and to put Jewish property into Christian hands...")

*According to the decree 1944/6, all Hungarian schools on the territory
which was ceded by Czechoslovakia to Hungary according to the Munich
agreement were closed. The only exception were the elementary schools
established prior to October 6, 1938. Also, after the Slovak authorities
assumed administrative duties from the Soviet Army in May 1945, all
Hungarian schools were closed and printed material in Hungarian was
proscribed. The use of the Hungarian language was forbidden in public
places.

*By par. 4 of the presidential decree 81 of October 10, 1945, all
Hungarian cultural activities were forbidden and cultural property was
confiscated. Children, beyond the mandatory school age were forbidden to
continue their education (i.e. high school or university). This was
similar to the law 1941/198, i.e. the "Jewish Codex" whose article 30
decrees that Jews could only attend Jewish schools and forbade all
printed material whose author was Jewish so that "they shouldn't be able
to damage the Slovak intellectual life".

*With the loss of civil rights, criminal activity against Hungarians
was not punishable. In addition, presidential decree 1945/88 of October
17, 1945 made possible the deportation of tens of thousands of
Hungarians into forced labor. Families were separated according to the
ability to work, the same as was done during the deportation of Jews
under the fascists. A total of 393 villages were surrounded by Army
troops and 44,000 people were deported. It is estimated that 1,000 died
as a consequence of the deportations. The victims were given one hour to
gather basic necessities, the rest of their property was confiscated. An
appeal was not possible.

*Presidential decree 137 of October 1945, made possible the arrest and
incarceration of "politically unreliables" without the need of formal
charges. This allowed the imprisonment of Hungarians without court
proceedings.

In a letter dated June 26, 1945, the Catholic Bishop of Csanad to
Archbishop Jozsef Grosz, writes: "....before closing this letter, I have
to tell you how Hungarians are treated in Kassa (Kosice). Anyone who
talks in Hungarian on the street gets slapped. The deported Hungarians
were only allowed 30 kg in personal effects. Thousand and thousands have
become homeless. The original inhabitants of this region, the
Hungarians, had all their property confiscated. A big M (for Hungarian,
i.e. Magyar) is tatooed on their arms, just like the Germans did to the
Jews..." Signed by Endre Hamvas, Bishop of Csanad. (See the archives of
the the Bishoprics of Szeged-Csanad, #1121/1945.)

Czechoslovak citizenship was eventually restored to the ethnic
Hungarians but they were not compensated for lost property. The
Hungarians who were forcibly resettled in the Sudetenland part of
Czechoslovakia were allowed to return to their original communities but
not to their expropriated properties.

It is to the great credit of American foreign policy that the US vetoed
the proposal for and thus prevented the deportation of the whole
Hungarian population from Czechoslovakia as advocated by Benes, although
the US did agree to a limited population exchange.

On the other hand, it was not much to the credit of the Allied Control
Commission that it did not act on 184 separate protests of the Hungarian
government regarding the discrimination against the Hungarian minority
in Czechoslovakia.

There exists extensive literature on the human rights abuses in
post-World War II Czechoslovakia. See for example:

New Haven, Yale Center for Int. & Area Studies 1984.

Dear Newsgroup or Resource Moderator:

ECONsult, Ltd. has a new Web Server site. We feel that the new service might
be of significant interest to
your readers and hope you'll let them know about it. Thanks.

NEW RESEARCH TEAM OFFERS FORECASTS OF EASTERN EUROPE

ECONsult is a new forecasting service specializing in the "Little Tigers" of
Eastern Europe, including the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary.
The service is a partnership between PRiMeR, an international political risk
analysis and market research firm, and AISA, a leading market research firm
in Central Europe. The new forecasts will provide not only an analysis of
economic sentiment, but also a quarterly report outlining public expectations
of unemployment, inflation and saving. Projections will also be made about
purchases of consumer durables and automobiles.

ECONsult forecasts provide a sensitive measure, and timely analysis of
changes in the most dynamic economies. Forecasting methods are strengthened
because they measure both the willingness and the ability to purchase.
Indicators of overall political satisfaction and satisfaction with government
economic policies are also provided. Clients of the new service can include
their specific strategic planning and marketing concerns in ECONsult surveys
by purchasing proprietary questions for analysis. ECONsult research adheres
to the ESOMAR and WAPOR codes of social research conduct. Surveys are
nationally representative and conducted by trained interviewers in
respondents' homes.

Surveys for the Czech Republic and Slovakia began in Sept. 1994. Lithuania
and Estonia surveys will be completed in October, with Poland to follow in
November. Inaugural issues will be available in early winter. Regular
quarterly forecasts begin in 1995, with coverage of Hungary, Bulgaria and
Latvia scheduled early in the year.

The lead analysts for ECONsult are Michael Deis, Ph.D., and Marek Boguszak,
Ph.D., President of AISA. Both have had prestigious research careers. Deis
was Olin public affairs fellow at Stanford University's Hoover Institution, a
senior analyst with RFE/RL and West Germany specialist for the U.S.
Information Agency's Office of Research. Boguszak holds a doctorate in
mathematics and has been a visiting researcher at l'Institut des Etudes
Demographiques in Paris and at Nuffield College, Oxford University. ECONsult

Neither Haynau/Franz Josef nor Pro1nay got punished. The trick seems to be
maintaining a long and relatively prosperous reign afterward, so that the
original passion for revenge largely dies out.

> Some even try to make them out to be "reformed criminals" who

They are in no way relieved of their responsibility. Ra1kosi died in
emigration, under the protection of the foreign power that employed him in
the first place. Much as Sza1lasi, he completely failed in creating anything
of lasting value, and much as Sza1lasi, his moral condemnation by the
country he led was pretty much complete. Had Sza1lasi escaped Allied
justice, as many nazi criminals did, and ended up under a false name in
South America, what would have been the moral difference? Ka1da1r on the
other hand succeeded in creating something that lasted long enough for him
to die a natural death, i.e. he successfully pulled of the trick described
above.

Sounds silly - social structure based around eating - but it's absolutely
 correct.
Look at the typical American family. People eat at different times, if they ea
t
home at all, and there is no time of day when the family get together. That
 loss
of a strong bond among family members is partly the result of Micky D's and
 Dominos.
Again, I offer the example of the French student I met in the US, who were
 accustomed
to having family meal, which were also family gatherings. Actually, when they
 told
me this, my immediate reaction was to think, "how strange - their families eat
 together
every day!?" That was when I realized I had lost something important.

+ - Re: Wrong analogy, varieties of political murder (mind) VÁLASZ  Feladó: (cikkei)

Tibor Benke makes a number of interesting points some of which are
clearly true, others are true or not depending on one's political philosophy,
while others I believe to be untrue. He uses F.J. Turner's THE HISTORY
OF THE FRONTIER IN AMERICAN HISTORY to suggest inferentially what most U.S.
historians and plain citizens like myself from the West regard as clearly
true: the U.S. frontier provided a "safety valve" for the bitterness and
social unrest which in Europe was channeled into peasant and working class
political parties. Thus the Austrian Werner Sombart in his 1911 essay,
WARUM GIBT ES KEINEN SOZIALISMUM IN DEN VEREINIGTEN STAATEN (WHY IS THERE
NO SOCIALISM IN THE UNITED STATES) argues that major socialist parties a
la the SPD in Germany or the SFIO in France were not created because in the
U.S. because of "the Ford car and apple pie," i.e., because of the wealth
and goods which average U.S. citizens could enjoy and the plethora of food
and other necessities available to U.S. industrial workers which were less
available to Russian and East European industrial workers (cf. NA DNE, THE
LOWER DEPTHS by Maxim Gorky).
With respect to the Sacco & Vanzettie cases, I agree with him almost
completely. Benke perhaps forgot to add that Judge Thayer who presided, was
alleged to have said in public (at a baseball game if memory serves) some-
thing to the effect that "he would get those damn Wop (i.e.,
Italian-Americans) anarchists). The case was reviewed by an "independent"
commission including the President of my alma mater, Harvard, President
Lowell, and the trial proceedings were found to be fair. Most historians
today would doubt that the proceedings were at all fair and I agree with
them--the climate of the time was so hysterical that a fair trial was al-
most impossible. A play by and later movie was later done about the trial
in which Vanzetti's "letter to Judge Thayer" was recited which in semi-
literate English has become a classic expression of the American belief in
free expression:
"If it had not been for these thing (sic-GC) I might have die
unmarked, unknown a failure. For what are the lives of a poor shoemaker
and a fishpedler, nothing. But now we are not a failure."
The full text may be found in THE POETRY OF FREEDOM and if anyone
wishes the exact citation please ask for it. I regard the executions as
redolent not of a capitalist conspiracy, but of the use by political leaders
of demogogic appeals to popular fanaticism and they represent to me just one
reason why the death penalty is reprehensible for they suggest that despite
all constitutional protections, it is still possible (to our shame) for inno-
cent people to be executed for crimes which they did not commit.
Corporate "execution" can perhaps be found allegedly in the case of
Karen Silkwood who died under mysterious circumstances after blowing the
whistle on a company which ran nuclear power plants for the U.S. government.
She was a local union leader and claimed the plants were not safe.
Though I remember the Rosenberg trial I have read arguments on *both*
sides that they were or were not guilty of espionage for the Soviets. Here
the problem for historians is that there clearly was a vast Communist
intelligence network devoted to passing information to Moscow. The Canadian
espionage cases as well as the Klaus Fuchs case clearly show this. In fact
Stalin evidently knew all about "Fatboy" which Truman first told him
about it at Yalta and the Russians only took from 1945-1945 to produce their
first A-Bomb and they replicated our H-Bomb even more quickly if memory
serves.
So I would be grateful to anyone OL who could tell me in an
objective and dispassionate way whether they think the Rosenberg
execution was justified or not (P.S. No *flames* please!).

one part of the soviet union was a region containing the carpathians
which had
a substantial jewish population. it is a region which hungary has long
claimed for itself. you know, ungvar, beregszasz, etc. there, before the
last war, the jewish population was one of the largest -- there was no
majority, just smaller or larger minorities, and the vast majority of the
jews there spoke hungarian as their first language, and still do. the
first violinist of the borodin quartet is such an example.to the extant
that hungarians wish to lay a claim on transylvania, southern slovakia,
the banat and ruthenia, hungary is laying a claim on jewish population as
well.

as for anit-semitism in hungary, it is something the jews of hungary
frequently mention. that the non-jews are less concerned about it is
understandable. very few slave-owners thought they were doing anything
moral reprehensible.

grandfather was probably discharged from the reserves after ten years of
service - something like the National Guard in the U.S. After an initial
period of training, reservists would go for additional training, maneuvers
etc. every summer. If, on the other hand, your grandfather was drafted
into the regular forces, he would have served three years in the regular
army, then been assigned to the reserves to complete his military
obligation. The laws were changed often from 1870 to World War one, but
basically that covers the situation. Note: there is a distinction between
the regular (Austrian "kk.", or Imperial forces, the Austro-Hungarian
K.u.K., or Imperial and Royal forces, and the "k.", or Royal Hungarian
forces. The latter were, except for cadre, reservists only. You are
superficially right - there were no major wars in which Austria-Hungary
was involved at that time. But it was the era of general armament, and
there were troubles in the Balkans. Austria-Hungary was probably the
fifth or sixth strongest military power in the world at the turn of the
century.

Well, not really. At the time of the Mexican-American War there weren't many
 people,
as far as I understand, in what is now New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada, and onl
y
military outposts and monestaries for converting INdians to Christianity in
 California -
yes, Greg whether they liked it or not. There wasn't much in the way of
 villiges , as far
as I know. The biggest problem the Mexican government had was "American
 immigrants."
There was a letter written by the Mexican governor of California in the mid
 1800's,
warning about the number of American immigrant moving into Mexican land, and th
e
need for the Mexican government to keep them out. So you see, everyone worries
about "others" invading their land - not a uniquely modern American concern.

By far, the only people with a right, and a very strong one in their case, to
 protest
the taking of land by the US are the variaous INdian traibes/nations. How do
 you
think the Mexicans got it, anyway???

Forgive my ignorance, but just who was this Joe Hill to deserve the
victimhood so seemingly unanimously on this list?

I must have skipped the pol sci class when this was taught. ;-)

Barni Bozoki asks about military service in teh Austro-Hungarian Monarchy
in the 19th century--

One place to start might be the recent book by Istva'n Dea'k, *Beyond Na-
tionalism--a History of the Habsburg Officer Corps*, or something like that.
Of course, it would have little to say about ordinary "grunts."
