+ - A remark to the summary of the interview with e (mind) VÁLASZ  Feladó: (cikkei)

Kopatsy:

Kopatsy has been a loud advocate of the forgiving of Hungarian debts
for years. I don't know much about economics but from the Hungarian press it
appeared to me that he represents an extreme among economists and even some
conservative-minded economists don't agree with his views. Personally I think
that freeing Hungary from the debt burden would be an immense help for the
country but I'm afraid it is little more than wishful thinking. The creditors
of Hungary, as far as I know, are primarily private banks who are not noted
for their kind-heartedness, not to mention the internal and international
government bonds which were issued to finance the budget deficit and were
mostly bought by individuals who just cannot afford "forgiving" their money.

Hungarian political jokes; here are a few from last year as a start:

Why did Gyula Horn suffer a car accident?
Because he was trying to steer to far towards left...

Why didn't he die in the accident?
He was protected by his "pufajka". (if you don't know the word,
longish historical explanation is needed)

What was the big mistake of the Hungarian electorate?
That they confused Cape Horn with the Cape of Good Hope.

                Bye,
                        Charlie
+ - Re: The basic treaties (mind) VÁLASZ  Feladó: (cikkei)

One quick comment on the question Joe Pannon asks regarding the Horn govern-
ment and the Basic Treaties:

Just this week, I think, I saw a passing reference in the Czech press that
once more bilateral talks between the Slovaks and the Hungarians on the
treaty had ended without any progress, and that each side blamed the other:

Has something happened that I missed suggesting that Horn is moving forward
faster than this report would suggest?

Sincerely,

Hugh Agnew

+ - Request for current Economic Data (mind) VÁLASZ  Feladó: (cikkei)

I am working on a paper for an East European Studies course at East Carolina
University, North Carolina, USA. I am particularly focusing on the effects
privatization has had on the current Hungarian economy. I have a good deal
of data up to the middle of 1994 but need more current data.

I am looking for current sources for information such as latest GDP, per capita
income, unemployment figures etc. I am interested in internet accessible
sources primarily but other sources would also be helpful.

Thank you in advance...
                                  Aubrey Jones  {  }

I've been following this list for about 1 1/2 months and have enjoyed the
discussions a great deal.

Hello,

I'm interested in buss-companies that have lines from Holland to Budapest.
I'm interested in the prices (in forints and/or guilders) and their
adresses.
If you have more information for me: Please let me know.

Thanks,
        Vincent.

First of all how can anyone call anything about good wines "frivolous"?
Secondly thanks a lot, I am heading that way on a business trip and will
take the list along and report back. I plan to be there only for a few
days so 1 or 2 may not be reported on.:-)

WHO HELPS YOU?

ATTENTION: THIS SURVEY IS BEING SENT TO MULTIPLE ELECTRONIC LISTS
AND DISCUSSION GROUPS. IF THIS IS A DUPLICATE, PLEASE DISREGARD. I
SINCERELY APOLOGIZE FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE.

Hello, my name is Anu Chitgopekar. I am a graduate student in the Department
of Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. I am conducting
a study of the existence and development of mentoring and peer helping
relationships in computer-mediated communication environments. I would
appreciate your participation in this investigation.

The following electronic survey which will take about 10 minutes to complete,
is vitally important to the project. You must be at least 18 years old to
participate and I hope to elicit several hundred responses. Even if you are
able to fill out only part of the survey, I will still benefit from your
participation. Your name and responses will be kept confidential. If your
return this to me electronically, I will immediately delete the message
header to ensure confidentiality. No individual responses will be made
public. Your participation is voluntary.

HOW TO RESPOND:
        1. You can use your editor to fill out the survey and then
forward to my e-mail address (given at end of questionnaire)
        2. You can download survey to your PC, fill it out, upload to
your server, and return to my e-mail address.
        3. You can print a hard copy and read off of it to send only
the responses to my e-mail address.
        4. You can print a hard copy, fill it out and then send it
to my postal address (given at end of questionnaire).

I appreciate your time and effort spent to participate in my study.

I am a law student at the Univ of California at Berkeley. I read in the
local newspaper yesterday that the Hungarian Supreme Court had
decided this week that the legislature must permit common-law (as
opposed to civil law) same-sex marriages. I would be extremely
grateful if someone could either send me a copy of this decision
(in Hungarian would be fine, since I can find a translator, or if possible
in English) or could they direct me to a place where I can find this
decision myself? I am in a class doing research related to this
topic and am very anxious to read this decision and understand its
legal bases. Thank you very much.

I do not feel that the cause of the US action in Yalta was the domination of
Western Europe. But I do believe in the selfishness of every state, including
hungary, and as such, countries try to use the political situation to their
advantage. As such, the conclusions of the writer (Kopa'tsy) are correct.

i.e. If debts would be forgiven, it would allow for the central european state
s
a more independent policy.
Without the lightening of burden, the will be under the will of the west.

+ - Re: Visit to Budapest (mind) VÁLASZ  Feladó: (cikkei)

There are others on this list who will undoubtedly have more, and more
interesting, suggestions, but as a non-Magyar I found the city of Eger
to be particularly worthwhile (and not far from Budapest--at least by
American standards). The ruins of the castle where just a handful of
Hungarian men and women (2000?) held off a Turkish invasion (100000?--my
memory for numbers is not great, but I know the ratio of Turks to
Hungarians was quite high) were inspiring to see. Plus, the city itself
has many of the same attractions (cathedrals, monuments, etc.) that you
find elsewhere in Hungary. Oh...the minuet in town is supposed to be
the largest in that part of Europe. Not to mention the availability of
the excellent Bikaver Egri. So . . . there's my recommendation.
