Your homepage is really nice. I see that your intentions are good in
presenting hungarian contributions in different fields, but you should be
careful about the material you have at your disposal. A statement about
Ga'bor A'ron (btw, he is A'ron) telling that he invented the cannon is not
only hilarious but also undermines the credibility of the other, much more
important contributions.

I hope you will find some time to correct this.

Best regards,

Zoli

         STALA KONFERENCIA SLOVENSKEJ INTELIGENCIE
PERMANENT CONFERENCE OF THE SLOVAK INTELLIGENTSIA

                               Bratislava, August 12, 1996

Dear Madams, Dear Sirs,

Please allow to send as the enclosure the common standpoint of
participants of the conference "The Truth about the 1100-Year
Neighbourhood" held on July 18 - 19, 1996 in Bratislava and aimed to
the evaluation of mutual ralations among Hungary and nations living in
the adjacent countries for the 1100 year period.

A hundred years ago, political and cultural representatives of
Romanians, Serbs and Slovaks living in the Hungarian Monarchy (as a
part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire) protested together against the
grandiose celebration of the 1000th anniversary of the arrival and
settlement of Hungarians in Central Europe. They remarked in their
statement that the Hungarian Monarchy was not just the state of
Hungars, but also the state of Germans, Romanians, Serbs, Slovaks,
Croatians and members of other nations.
At the same time they required more cultural and political rights
for their nations and more extensive democratization of public life in
the Hungarian Monarchy. The hundredth anniversary of a common
appearance of non-Hungarian nations of the Hungarian Monarchy as well
as the organization of the same celebration, now of the 1100th century
of the arrival and settlement of Hungars in Central Europe initiated
the arrangement of our conference.

Famous historians tried in their speech at the conference, which we
submit in this collection, to evaluate what was changed and what
wasn't in the relations of Magyaria to its direct neighbours. The
conference was organised with the civic association SKSI Slovakia plus
(The Permanent Conference of the Slovak Intelligentsia - Slovakia
 plus).

Shortly, we are preparing an English and Slovak issue of Review
based on reports aired on this conference. In the event of indicating
your interest we will provide it for you free. In the conclusion, I
would like to give a little note. Hungarian as well as many other
European languages does not distinguish between the terms "Hungarian"
and "Magyarian". The first one follows from the name of the
multinational state "The Hungarian Monarchy" which was established at
the turn of the 10th and 11th centuries and perished in 1918 via the
end of the World War. The second one follows from the name of the
nation "Hungary". For the purposes of factual and historically
correct expression, it would be correct to consistently distinguish
between the meaning of both terms in their use.

Yours faithfully,
PhDr. Mojmir Benta
podpredseda

THE FINAL COMMUNIQUE OF THE PARTICIPANTS OF THE CONFERENCE
"THE TRUTH ABOUT A 1100-YEAR OLD NEIGHBORHOOD"

One hundred years ago, on August 10, 1895, the Congress of
Nationalities of Non-Hungarian Peoples of the Hungarian Monarchy took
place in Budapest. The Congress was the result of a more than 50-year
old effort to strengthen mutual solidarity, political cooperation, and
a coordinated approach to the struggle for their national and social
rights.

Representatives of national movements of the Romanians, Slovaks, and
Serbs took part in the Congress.

The program adopted by the Congress sharply refused the Hungarian
state idea of a uni-ethnic Hungarian Monarchy and for each
nationality, it requested broad cultural, national, and political
autonomy. It asked for a widespread democratization of the political
life in the country, and especially universal, equal, and anonymous
suffrage, a just apportionment of voting districts, freedom of
gathering and speech, abolition of censorship, and so forth.

The Committee of Nationalities also raised a sharp protest against
the false spirit of the celebrations of the 1000th anniversary of the
arrival of the Hungarians into Central Europe. After the Congress, the
Hungarian government, led by Baron D. Banffy, started to promote the
Hungarian state idea with an even greater energy and brutality, and it
intensified its oppression of ethnic minorities and persecution of
representatives of national movements. The consequences of Banffy's
terror vis-a-vis the variouss nationalities in the Hungarian Monarchy
was most notably evidenced by the fact, that their political
cooperation gradually became weaker and none of the national parties
was able to sufficiently capitalize on the political and moral
potential, raised by the Congress of Nationalities and its democratic
program.

Today, one hundred years after the Congress, we can say with
great satisfaction, that the situation in Europe, and especially in
Central Europe, has changed significantly. All its nations, even those
that had lived under oppression in the Hungarian Monarchy, now live in
their own free nation-states.

The basic human rights and freedoms became an everyday fact in all of
them, guaranteed by their constitutions and a host of legal
regulations.

However, we are asking the following question: Has the policy of
the Hungarian state and its politicians changed? We have to admit
with regret that the answer is "not much". To this day, Hungarian
politicians have not been able to cope with the historical fact of
disappearance of the Hungarian Monarchy and with it, the possibility
to make the idea of a great Hungary come true. By the re-adoption of
the state sign of the Hungarian Monarchy, the current Hungary returned
to the Hungarian statehood and the tradition of the idea of a Great
Hungary.

Just like in the past, at present Hungary unilaterally assumes
the role of the pillar that guarantees stability, democracy,
integration, cooperation, and a peaceful coexistence of nations in
Central Europe, while its own domestic and foreign policy represents
the exact opposite.
The permanent constant of Hungarian policy is the sharp
contradiction between the proclaimed ideas and the facts of real life.
This contradiction is best evidenced by the issue of ethnic
minorities. When Hungarian politicians speak about minorities, what
they have in mind are first and foremost the Hungarians minorities
living in the neighboring countries, rather that the minorities living
in Hungary. The paradox is, that while in the "non-democratic"
countries neighboring with Hungary, the minorities have not become
extinct and they are thriving, the minorities in the "democratic
Hungary" are becoming extinct.

We support friendly coexistence and cooperation among all nations
and states in the world, especially those living in our immediate
neighborhood. We are aware of the need for new relations in the
current and future Europe, unburdened by history, but based on the
principle of equality and equal worth of all nations and states.
We recognize and confirm, that respect for human rights and the
basic freedoms of all its bearers without exception is a significant
factor of peace, justice, stability, democracy, and good neighbor
relations. The basic prerequisite for Central Europe's becoming an
area of stability and peaceful cooperation is that there be a radical
turn in the policy of the Hungarian state vis-a-vis the minorities
living on its territories, and vis-a-vis the countries who are its
immediate neighbors.

By a public proclamation of its highest state bodies, Hungary has
to make the commitment to respect the decisions of the Paris Peace
Conference of 1946, to foreever renounce the "iredenta" and its
support, to renounce any claims to territories of other countries, not
to interfere with the internal affairs of other sovereign countries
using any excuse, and to respect all human rights and basic freedoms
of every individual, including individuals belonging to ethnic
minorities, which have been legally and politically acknowledged by
international documents.

A radical change has to also take place in the approach of
supranational institutions and integration blocs to the counties of
Central and Eastern Europe, who often interfere with the affairs of
sovereign states without a deeper knowledge of the subject matter and
on the basis of unilateral information.
We would like to point out, that by using the method of double
standards to the evaluation of countries of Central and Eastern
Europe, the process of European integration is losing its
trustworthiness and democratic nature.

Done in Bratislava, on July 19, 1996.

Since you have chosen to post an item in soc.culture.magyar in the Romanian
language, perhaps you wouldn't mind posting it in English for my interest.

I am aware of the significance of Avram Iancu, but also of another darker
side of Avram Iancu, a society during the Ceausescu era which called itself
after the name of Avram Iancu and sent death threat missives to Romanians in
North American who dared to fraternize with Hungarians. I have copies of two
of these missives with their stylistic Avram Iancu letterhead. Quite
disgusting stuff actually! It was as if it was a precursor to the Vatra
Romaneassholes.

Hungarian Folk Music Concerts By Ghymes Ensemble (Pozsony, Szlovakia):

The Getty College of Arts and Sciences Department of Music
Ohio Northern University
Ada, OH 45810

Ghymes is a Hugarian folk ensemble which has been playing together for ten
years. Based in Bratislava (Pozsony - the former capital of Hungary),
Slovakia, they are members of the large ethnic Hungarian minority which
resides in the regions of Slovakia. The members of Ghymes believe
strongly in the universality and binding strength of music to transcend
cultural and linguistic boundaries and bring us ever closer to global
harmony.

Since 1984 the band has performed as part of a state funded Hungarian
ensemble called Ifju Szivek (Young Hearts), which is comprised of a
foldance troupe, a symphony orchestra, a choir, an ancient music ensemble,
and Ghymes. Ghymes became full-time professionals in 1990.

That same year the band widened its horizons by joining with a
French-based ensemble called Vents d'est (Eastern Wind). Headed by Mique
Montanaro and comprised of singers and musicians playing French, Slavic
and Hungarian folk music they combine musical genres to create a new and
universal sound. This ongoing collaboration has yielded a French release
titled Migrations.

Ghymes began its life as folk musicians in the tradition of the Hungarian
tanchaz (community dance) revival of the 1960-70's. For years they
conducted research tours, collecting songs for their repertoire and
playing as dance accompanists. Convinced, however, that their tanchaz
based audience would be forever limited, they decided to break tradition
and play exclusively as concert musicians. Their mission is to evolve and
build a new popular music based on Hungarian folk roots. They aim their
music at the young people of the rock and roll generation, striving to
turn those minds to an appreciation of their own ethnic roots.
Simultaneaously they proliferate their sound, powerful and beautiful, to
audiences around the world. They have toured Japan, Finland, France,
Switzerland, Austria, Iraq, Jordan, Spain, Greece, and for the first time
in 1994, the USA. Always meeting an enthusiastic response, their live
music energizes and engages. In concert they introduce the title song of
their album Message as being about freedom, music's freedom. The music of
Ghymes is free, free of national boundaries and prejudices, free to move
us out of our seats and dance.
