Intro: Police in Hungary have arrested three people in what is
described as the country's biggest uranium smuggling case in a
decade. Stefan Bos in Budapest reports Hungarian authorities are
continuing their investigation.
Text: Police spokesman Laszlo Garamvolgy says three people are
in custody and a fourth individual still is at large.
Mr. Garamvolgy said the suspects -- described only as Hungarians
and foreigners -- are believed to have smuggled between 26 and 28
kilograms of uranium into Hungary.
The suspects were arrested earlier this month, but it was not
made known until Thursday. Police investigations into the case
started November 10th after a 46-kilogram container carrying
uranium was discovered in the trunk of a car.
Experts involved with the investigation believe the radioactive
material most likely originated from a Russian nuclear submarine.
Russians scientists are expected to arrive in Budapest later in
the week.
Hungarian authorities are increasingly concerned about the
smuggling of radioactive material. In August, two kilograms of
uranium were discovered in a car in front of a Budapest hotel.
The uranium currently under investigation has been taken to a
Budapest physics research institute. (Signed)
